Moffat Gems

Moffat Motorcycle GrouMoffat Ram

Sitting at the top end of Moffat, The Ram has surveyed the High Street since 1875. If you look closely you will notice an unusual omission on the statue, no ears.

“It has nae lugs” was the cry from the crowd at the unveiling of the attractive black-faced ewe much to the embarrassment of sculptor William Brodie.

Famous Sons & Visitors

Air Chief Marshall Lord Hugh Dowding commanded the RAF fighter Command during the Battle of Britain and his achievements are celebrated in a Dowding Memorial Service each September.
It is not surprising Moffat has good transport links when John Loudon Macadam, inventor of the ‘tarmacadam’ road, is buried in the town centre cemetery close.

Robert Burns, Scotland's national bard, visited Moffat on numerous occasions, on one visit he scratched a verse on the window of the Black Bull Hotel.

Culture & Heritage

The attractive built environment of Moffat owes much to the prosperity imbued during the 19th century in the Spa era. The popularity of the sulphurous waters emanating from the Old Well saw the building of Baths Hall & Assembly Rooms, now the Town Hall and the creation of Station Park with its boating lake.

Not only is it very attractive, Moffat lays claim to the narrowest street in Scotland, Syme Street between the jewellers and Ariete café, while Chapel Street is the shortest street in the UK. You will find it just off Well Street. In the small category, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the ‘world famous’ Star Hotel, at only 20 feet across, is the narrowest hotel in Britain if not the world! We can also claim longevity; Thomas Hetheringtons the chemist is reputedly the oldest pharmacy in Scotland.

Shopping

In Moffat we are blessed with many great little, independently owned shops. The Moffat Toffee shop is a third generation, sweet making family run establishment. A visit is like returning to childhood with the many old fashioned sweets in jars on offer, handily the little bags are ideal to fit in a pannier! Wander round High Street and Well Street and enjoy the wide range of interesting shops.
